Sony believes PS4-exclusive Until Dawn will help make horror games popular again, which isn’t all that far-fetched.
The horror genre is already mainstream in other forms of the entertainment industry, particularly in TV and movies, but not so much in the video game industry ever since big name franchises like Resident Evil became more action-oriented and Silent Hill ceased to be relevant.
In an interview with MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s Product Marketing Manager Joe Palmer shared a bit on the impact he feels Until Dawn could have on the gaming industry, stating that games like “The Evil Within, Resident Evil HD, Alien: Isolation and Dying Light” have already created a healthy appetite for horror game fans.
He feels that the introduction of more successful horror games would video game developers the confidence to release even more of them, a sentiment we strongly agree with.
Until Dawn won’t be able to make the segment popular by itself and needs all the help it can get. Unfortunately, Konami cancelling Silent Hills and Deep Silver dropping the developer for Dead Island 2 are definite setbacks.
If ever there was one game that would make survival horror games mainstream again, what will it be and what will it look like? Let us know in the comments below.
